About Pathology Consultants of New Jersey

Pathology Consultants is an anatomic pathology laboratory specializing in the evaluation of tissue biopsies and specimens. Pathology Consultants provides diagnostic and prognostic information in a high quality, cost-effective and timely manner. We provide a wide range of expertise in surgical pathology and cytology. We are experienced at serving the needs of freestanding surgery centers. We take pride in the professional quality of our work and our reputation for excellence.

Physicians and Staff of Pathology Consultants

The pathologists at Pathology Consultants are all Board Certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and are recognized for their subspecialty expertise in gastrointestinal pathology. They are dedicated to providing the highest quality medical care and best service to their referring physicians. We meet our goals by establishing a personal relationship between gastroenterologist and pathologist. Through regular communication and discussion of findings, we enhance the accuracy and value of our diagnoses, and assist the referring physicians in providing the best possible care for their patients.


Barry Benisch, MD

Dr. Benisch is Vice Chairman of Pathology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway, where he served as Chairman for 25 years. He has more than 40 years of experience as a surgical pathologist. Dr. Benisch received his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and his MD degree from the State University of New York College of Medicine at Buffalo. He trained in anatomic and clinical pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, where he served as Chief Resident. He has been an assistant clinical professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine since 1974. Dr. Benisch has served in many leadership positions at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway, including President of the medical staff, member of the Medical Executive Committee and a member of the Board of Governors. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, and a member of the New Jersey Society of Pathologists. Dr. Benisch is the author of over 50 scientific articles in various medical journals.
Michael Gistrak, MD



Dr. Gistrak is Chairman of Pathology at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway, where he has served as a member of the Medical Staff since 1996 and Vice Chairman from 1996 to 2021. He received his undergraduate degree Magna Cum Laude from Brown University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his MD degree from Weill Cornell Medical College, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, followed by a fellowship in Oncologic Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he was the recipient of an American Cancer Society Training Grant. Dr. Gistrak is active in the New Jersey Society of Pathologists, where he served as President from 2013-2015 and is currently a member of the Executive Committee. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and is a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists.

Michelle Ye, MD

Dr. Ye is a graduate of the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University. She received her training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York. Following her residency, she participated in a fellowship in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. She has expertise and experience in all areas of surgical pathology and cytopathology. She is also an author of over 20 publications in the medical literature. Dr. Ye an attending physician at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway. She is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, and a member of the New Jersey Society of Pathologists.
Scott Merlin, MD



Dr. Merlin received his undergraduate and Master’s degrees in physiology and experimental surgery from McGill University in Montreal, Canada and his MD degree from the Technion -Israel Institute of Technology medical school, graduating with clinical honors. He trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at New York Presbyterian Hospital- Weill Cornell Medical Center and completed his fellowship training in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Dr. Merlin is an author of several publications in anatomic pathology. He is a skilled surgical pathologist with particular interests in gastrointestinal pathology, oncologic pathology, and breast pathology. He is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, and a member of the New Jersey Society of Pathologists. He is an attending physician at RWJ University Hospital at Rahway-RWJ Barnabas Health, where he serves on numerous committees including the Credentials and CME committees.

Tatiana Shtilbans, MD

Dr. Shtilbans received her MD degree from I.P. Pavlov State Medical University in St. Petersburg, Russia. She trained in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at North Shore-LIJ Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, where she served as Chief Resident in her Senior year. She has completed two subspecialty fellowships. The first was in Oncologic Surgical Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Her second fellowship was in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. Dr. Shtilbans is the author of several publications in Gastrointestinal Pathology. She also maintains a wide range of interests in all areas of anatomic pathology. Dr. Shtilbans is board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, a Fellow of the College of American Pathologists, and a member of the New Jersey Society of Pathologists. She is a member of the medical staff at RWJ University Hospital at Rahway-RWJ Barnabas Health.
